Why does my baby BURST in tears and sobs in his sleep?

He does this weird thing where he breathes heavily and then cries like he's afraid of something. An emotional cry. When he cries during the time that he is awake, he sounds normal like a reg. baby cry. But when he gets there nightmare attacks he cries REALLY loud and the suddenly stops... what is causing this? Loud music from during the day? or what?
