Motorcycle tune up and cost?

I have a 82 Yamaha Maxim 650 and lately its been making odd noises and cutting off on me. The previous owner I know didn't take care of it the way it should and I dont know how I, myself can do it all. Whats the best way I can have it tuned up and what would the estimated cost be?
